Dental Support Organizations (DSOs) are uniquely positioned to help dentists expand access to care among underserved communities, and recent data show DSOs are taking the lead in caring for patients enrolled in both Medicaid and CHIP. DSOs provide non-clinical, business and administrative support to dental practices so that dentists can focus on their patients.

Kool Smiles is an excellent example of successful implementation of the DSO model. With 123 dental practices in 15 states and DC, Kool Smiles sees an average of more than 2 million patient visits per year. Approximately 90% of Kool Smiles patients are Medicaid or CHIP enrollees.

Recognizing that DSOs play a key role in expanding access to dental care, the National Black Caucus of State Legislators (NBCSL) has resolved to support leading DSOs in their mission to provide affordable, quality dental services across the United States.

DSOs also offer extensive support, pay, benefits and education to dentists, hygienists and dental assistants. With the support and stability offered, team members are able to enjoy long-lasting, rewarding careers.
